designed by isamu noguchi (1904-1988), the akari lights are sculptural as well as functional. first designed in 1951, the akari were inspired by traditional paper lanterns seen on a trip to Japan. noguchi, an american, often combined traditional aspects of japanese art and design with western concepts. akari, meaning illuminating light, still have an essence of ancient harmony in form while remaining strongly modern in tone.
